Spiti Valley sits at over 4,000 metres and feels like a different world — barren mountains, centuries-old monasteries clinging to cliffsides, and villages where time moves slowly. This six-day route runs from Manali all the way to Shimla via Kaza, Tabo, Nako, and Kalpa, covering the valley’s iconic landmarks at a pace that lets you actually absorb them. Best suited for adventure lovers, solo travellers, and small groups who want something genuinely off the beaten track, with genuine Himalayan hospitality in hotels and homestays.
Day 1 — Manali to Kaza (200 km | 8–10 hrs) Early morning departure from Manali. The drive itself is part of the experience — cross the Atal Tunnel, pass through Gramphu and Batal, and ascend Kunzum Pass (4,590 m) before descending into Kaza. Check-in, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 2 — Kaza: Key, Kibber & Chicham Visit Key Monastery, one of Spiti’s most striking monasteries set on a hilltop, then the high-altitude village of Kibber. Walk across Chicham Bridge — Asia’s highest motorable suspension bridge. Evening at Kaza’s local market.
Day 3 — Hikkim, Komic & Langza Post a card from Hikkim Post Office, the world’s highest post office. Explore Komic Village (one of the highest inhabited villages on Earth) and photograph the Langza Buddha Statue against the mountain skyline. Fossil hunting along the way.
Day 4 — Kaza to Dhankar to Tabo Visit Dhankar Monastery, dramatically perched above the Spiti-Pin confluence. Optional short trek to Dhankar Lake. Continue to Tabo — home to one of India’s oldest active monasteries, over 1,000 years old. Overnight in Tabo.
Day 5 — Tabo to Gue to Nako A morning with the famous Gue Mummy — a naturally mummified Buddhist monk, one of the few in the world. Drive to the serene Nako Lake and soak in views of the Kinnaur Kailash range.
Day 6 — Nako to Kalpa to Shimla Stop at Kalpa for views of the Kinnaur Kailash peak, then drive towards Shimla. The tour concludes with some of the most beautiful orchard country in Himachal Pradesh. Tour ends at Shimla.
The Manali–Spiti route via Kunzum Pass is open from approximately June to October. The Shimla–Spiti route (via Kinnaur) may be accessible earlier. We advise travelling between June and September for the best road conditions.
It's manageable for reasonably fit first-timers who are prepared for long drives and basic altitude (4,000–4,500 m). Read our packing list and travel tips carefully. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol the first night, and go slowly.
BSNL and Jio have the most coverage in the valley. Carry cash — digital payments may not work at smaller establishments, and ATMs are scarce once you leave Kaza.
Yes, and many of our solo travellers love Spiti. We can arrange a shared cab to reduce costs. Contact us and we'll connect you with others travelling on similar dates.
